Memphis

Memphis

Monday, we left Tucumcari, New Mexico in beautiful weather.  Since we stayed in a vintage Route 66 motel, we decided to take Route 66 for our next leg to Oklahoma City, OK.  Our first stop was Adrian, Texas which is the mid-way point between Santa Monica and Chicago on the historic Route 66.  We had an excellent breakfast at the Midpoint Cafe.

The drive through Texas was boring and super windy.  We finally got into Oklahoma and stopped in Oklahoma City for the night.  We stayed in Bricktown which was, not surprisingly, a part of town full of old brick buildings.  Actually, a cool part of town with bars and restaurants.  We hit a local brewery for a pint, and ended up staying for dinner.  Shared the avocado fries and fried chicken salad.  Beer and food were both yummy.  We were advised by our transport drive Forever Friday would likely be spending the night in Texarkana, and was safe.  (Thank God!)

Left OK this morning in, again, wonderful weather.  (We have been very lucky to avoid the Summer thunderstorms.)  Our easiest drive (with very little wind and fewer big rigs) through Arkansas into Tennessee.  Arkansas was actually quite pretty, and very green.  We stopped in Clarksville, AK for a very cafeteria-type lunch (long story…Mary wanted to stop at a place in Ozark called Hillbilly Cafe – shit you not – and Mike thought it was too much of a truck stop.  Ended up driving all around until Mary got hangry and we finally stopped at a drive-through-type place where we had grilled cheese sandwiches and tater tots).

Made it in pretty good time to Memphis, Tennessee.  Traveling across the Mississippi was very cool!

Got checked into Memphis and took a nice walk to the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid, which is worth the experience.  Took the highest freestanding elevator in the US up to the top, and had a couple whiskey drinks to celebrate our entry into TN.  (Mike initially ordered a tequila drink, and I shamed him.)  Walked back into town to Beale Street and hit a honky tonk bar, then a blues bar for gumbo and more beer.  Excellent music to be had everywhere, and bikers galore.  Great evening.

We plan to drive to Grand Rivers tomorrow morning to meet our beloved, and hopefully totally safe, Forever Friday.
