Lick Creek to Grand Rivers, KY. Grand Rivers, KY to Kuttawa, KY

So, this is for my friend Jackie Clement, who is super impatient.

Wednesday morning, while at our beautiful anchorage at Lick Creek, Mike and I took a ride around the Creek in our dinghy.  Waters are very skinny here, and we need to heed that.  While dinking about, we ran aground a little bit with our outboard; no harm…no foul.  The even more scary part was an Asian Carp that was maybe 20 inches long that flew out of the water about 4 feet coming perilously close to flying into our dinghy.  Scared the *&$# out of me.  These large, very agile fish are a part of life here.  They are creepy, to say the least.  If they land in your boat, they apparently bleed like you’ve never seen.  And, I don’t want to see it.  In some parts, there are electric fences to keep them away as they’ve negatively impacted the fishing industry.  The past couple days, we’ve seen a ton of them dead and floating in the water.  They’re huge, and gross.

Had a super uneventful and lovely trip from Like Creek to Green Turtle Bay, a short 35 miles.  Saw lots of turtles, wild turkeys, a beautiful huge eagle, and lots of deer.  Mike got his first social security check, so I had him take me out for a steak dinner at the yacht club!

Yesterday, we did laundry and I took the courtesy car to run some errands and re-provision.  One of my favorite places here is the Lite Side Cafe, a little cafe and bakery owned by Irene and her husband.  Irene comes in before the crack of dawn every day and bakes bread and muffins.  We have been spoiled by her sourdough bread (that she slices fresh for us) while we’ve been here.  I buy her muffins for the staff at Green Turtle Bay who are so awesome.  (Mike and I split a blueberry one once.  It was awesome.)  Took the dingy out to put some hours on the new outboard.  Totally digging her.  Hit the Thirsty Turtle for a beer with Kate, then back to the boat where I made dinner.

This morning, Mike washed the boat (a huge feat here as there are a kazillion spiders and their shit is like oil on your boat…ugh!) and installed our new anemometer (wind speed and direction instrument).  Around 2:00, we took off for Buzzard Rock, a marina and restaurant bar about ten miles across Lake Barkley.  Having an outboard mechanic do a 10 hour service on our outboard tomorrow morning.  Will likely stay here until Sunday; the long dock is cheap, and the restaurant and bar are great.

Beautiful, and productive, day.  Weather is beautiful and warm, and we continue to be wowed by the southern hospitality of this area.  Folks here are so damn nice.

Happy Friday Funday!  M&M

***Side Note:

Mary always passes me the laptop after she finishes the blog (I get to “proof-read” the English major…lol).  I see that she included a couple shots of me in the dink, sans hat.  I do want all y’all to know that I do wear a hat outdoors…she actually POSED me for that shot!  (“Honey, take your hat off”)  Hmmmf.  On another note, I have been making Mary drive the boat much of the time (don’t have to push too hard).  She has been entering and backing out of tight slips & docks…with much finesse…the girl has gotten really good at it!

Talk soon!

  2. We were so glad to meet you on Ky lake today. We have had an interaction or two with Asian Carp on KY Lake and are worried about those invasive fish here. Enjoy your journey. We will follow you.

    1. Great meeting you all as well. Yes, those fish are scary for sure! There seem to be a lot more of them on Barkley, but I think they ultimately get everywhere.

  3. Finally got on here to read your blog. Love it. Weird knowing your not a car ride away anymore, but so happy for you two.
Love you and look forward to reading about your adventures.
