Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake to Lake Barkley

Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake to Lake Barkley

Had a great experience with Terry, the outboard mechanic at Buzzard Rock, on Saturday.  New outboard has its initial service done.  Really dug the long dock at this place.

Took the dink up to Hu-B’s restaurant and bar at Kattawa Marina for a cocktail.  Beautiful marina, and a fabulous bar with a beautiful view of Lake Barkley.

Back to Buzzard Rock and met with Kent and Heather of Heartbeat for Happy Hour.  They said they were taking their boat Sunday to an anchorage on Kentucky Lake.  Mike and I did dinner on the grill, sat atop our upper deck with a glass of wine (and our thermocell) and watched the stars.

Yesterday, crossed through the canal that connects Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake.  (For reference, Lake Barkley is 134 miles long and covers 58,000 acres.  Kentucky Lake is a 160,000 acre lake that is 184 miles long.  This canal is at the northern portion of the lakes.)  Headed south on Kentucky Lake to Duncan Bay and dropped the hook next to Heartbeat.  It was hotter than Hades, so we immediately donned our suits and jumped in the water.  Swam over to the crew at Heartbeat and floated in the lake with a cold beer for a while.

Jumped in the dink, and cruised around a bit.  Met some folks in another bay who were rafted up in their two pontoon boats (which are everywhere here).  We got to talking about where we were all from, and our trip.  (They were from Paducah.)  They threw us a line, and a couple cold beers.  And, this was before we told him how much we have enjoyed the southern hospitality in Kentucky.  We have yet to meet an unfriendly person here.

A houseboat was in the anchorage when we got there, but left around sunset, so we had the bay to ourselves.  Sunset, again, was spectacular.

Took off this morning after brekkie.  We were anchored in ~11 feet, so only had about 75 feet of chain out.  Makes pulling up anchor super quick and easy.  The Rocna anchor has totally lived up to its excellent reputation.

The crew of Heartbeat (Penny the Golden Retriever is in the middle) were already in the water when we departed.

Beautiful trip back to Green Turtle Bay.

We’ll be here for most of the next week or two while we wait for our bimini to be fabricated.  We need shade on the upper deck for sure.  Once we have our bimini, and the weather is good, we will head south in earnest.  Weather forecast is clear and hot this week, with rain and thunderstorms expected Saturday on.  TGFAC (thank God for Air Conditioning!) lol

Happy Monday!  M&M

  1. What an amazing adventure 🛥⚓️ I absolutely love reading your blog 😊 I miss you guys ❤️ #funtimes #retirement #love

  2. Mary…it is so fun following your adventures. I had no idea that Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley existed let alone how big they are! Lake Tahoe, by comparison, is only 22 X 70 miles and 122,600 acres. Everyone has heard of Lake Tahoe. Why don’t I know about these two lakes???
Seems like the best part of your travels is gathering friends as you chug along.
    Love to you both!

    1. These lakes are very popular out here. They are totally different from Tahoe, but so beautiful. And, different in various areas. Meeting so many nice people. Middle America has some very, very nice people. Please and thank you and just general politeness is something so glaring here. Refreshing for sure! Love you back.
